Final Fantasy XIV 2.0 – A Realm Reborn
MMORPG review by Steve Walker
Description: Taking place shortly after the Empire summoned Bahamut, Eorzea was left scarred and the people were left with broken memories of what transpired. Three great nations, the scions and the warriors chosen by the light work together to rebuild and fight off those who would destroy their way of lives.
Review: This game has come a long way since its original release in 2010. A thorough failure, the team was replaced and the game was reconstructed and officially re-released in 2013. The new story expresses the desperation of those who live to fight off the empire and prevent the beast tribes from summoning their primals. Character development is strong and the story builds upon itself quite well. There have been several updates since the release of A Realm Reborn, each adding new content and different aspects to the game. Side stories, such as my personal favorite Hildibrand, bring a new life into the game using fresh faces and goofy animations similar to the popular Gary’s Mod. Players can interact with each other using linkshells and may join a Free Company, which is essentially a player built army and a place where players can call home.
The downside to this game is the end game content cannot be completed alone. Meaning many solo players such as myself must rely on other players to have the skills, gear and a decent internet connection to properly complete the challenges. The gear can only be obtained by grinding for hours to obtain enough materials or currency (although this is with all MMORPG, so this is not a surprise). The game currently lacks a strong PVP (player versus player) field, but Final Fantasy is not known for it.
The constant addition of these updates expands the world and keeps the fans playing. The first separately sold expansion (update 3.0), Heavensward, was stated to be released in spring 2015 at the last Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival in Las Vegas. This will include new roles, races and challenges. Something for all current and future players to look forward to.
